How Philanthropy Can Attract Millennials to Your Workplace

These are the wise words of philanthropist Warren Buffet.
Philanthropy in the workplace is nothing new but how it is conducted is changing and evolving rapidly to meet the needs of the Millennials. A recent Deloitte Survey indicated 6 out of 10 Millennials said a sense of purpose is part of the reason they chose to work for their current employer. Employee driven giving programs are a unique way to attract and retain employees who are looking for an employer aligned with their values of giving back to the community and work-life balance.
When looking for a job/career, Millennials will often put a company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) ahead of other benefits. They are looking to make the world a better place and will make time to participate in charitable activities they are passionate about.
Millennials are not only looking for employers whose brands they are attracted to but also that the employers CSR values match their own. Creating a mission with shared values around an employee driven giving program is the simplest way to embrace this concept and attract and retain employees in this challenging time.
What does it mean to give well? Many of us give reactively to campaigns in the media or requests from family and friends. Do we really know what the outcome is and is this an organization we would have chosen to support? A little research from reliable resources goes a long way towards giving well. Defining what cause or initiative you are interested in supporting; identifying charities in that sector, assessing their impact, reviewing their financials are all part of the roadmap to finding the right one for you. Engaging your employees in this process provides education, leadership opportunities, an opportunity for cross collaboration within the company and that feel good aspect of giving back to the community. Sharing your philanthropic activities on social media is the next step allowing the company to gain external recognition and acknowledge these newly formed partnerships.
