7 key points when building an award-winning team

July 30th, 2015

There is no “one size fits all” answer to how to create an award winning team, but there are some fundamental components that need to be there. The following are seven key things that every employer should consider when building a winning team.

1. Creating an award winning team or workplace starts long before you have your people onboard. It starts with your organization’s reputation. Are you a company that someone would be proud to work for? How do you tell your “story” to potential new hires in an interview…why would they want to come work with you? Do they have similar values to yours and will they blend well with your existing team(s)? These are key considerations that will set the tone for all of your interactions with your employees on an ongoing basis.

2. Once they start, ensure that the new employee is immediately made to feel that they belong and that they are a part of the “team” this is critical and is often facilitated through a customized “onboarding program”.

3. Share the vision for your organization and how each individual on your team can contribute to realizing that vision. When people are working towards a common goal they tend to be more successful and engaged.

4. Winning teams are cohesive and tend to work well together. As an employer creating an environment of collaboration and open communication is critical (especially for the Gen Y’s in your office).

5. Capitalize on everyone’s strengths and expertise. When people are appreciated and valued for their knowledge and what they can contribute they will usually rise to the occasion and deliver.

6. Celebrate successes – no matter how big or small. People like to be appreciated.

7. Provide good leadership, this is key to the success of your teams (and your business). Ensure that those who “lead” in your organization are approachable, authentic, fair, honest and strong communicators. A good leader knows when to let their team “run with it” and when to “pull back”.

To sum it up the way to build an award winning team and business is to find the best people and then let them do what they do best!
